The latest album from the former Hey Colossus guitarist is an evolution of the dreamlike journey embarked upon on 2022’s Goose Green S/T (made with Leon Marks of $&$ and CZN). It’s also the first music released under his own name.

‘Outside In’ alternates between the natural sounds that frame the songs and solo guitar pieces with minimal overdubs and electronic support. The album is intended to take the listener on an adventure of wide-eyed exploration and suspension.

The music was conceived after a fruitless search for 1980s ambient music rooted in the culture, chords and harmonies found in jazz, soul and R&B. Richards decided to create what he could not find in the digital goldmine.

It utilises field recordings sent by friends in distant lands, alongside his own recordings from his travels as well as his southeast London habitat. It features Brazilian rainstorms, eerie coastal caves, howling sirens, crashing waves and a sonic postcard from a Japanese road trip.

These songs can remove us from our physical settings even if only for a short, but welcome, while.

These are harmonic soundscapes to counteract the overbearing dissonance of 21st century existence – where gentleness is often mistaken for weakness.

I saw Haress support Godspeed in Coventry over the weekend and haven't been able to stop myself thinking about their set.
